When my student teaching ended, I had just finished teaching my students The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. As my goodbye, I wrote them a Shakespearean Sonnet (complete with iambic pentameter) to thank them for all they taught me and the fun I had as their teacher.
Teaching is an art, each student a blank:
A canvas of white, a page with no words.
But here at the end, it’s you that I thank,
You smarties, you athletes, artists and nerds.
You, the student, have taught me, the teacher!
Reversing our roles day in and day out
Each kid my own inspirational speaker
I’m grateful to have met you, have no doubt.
Just one more lesson for you all to learn.
You’re a rough draft of the person you are,
Find your passion, that thing that makes you yearn
For a better life; become your own star.
Although parting is such a sweet sorrow,
This is just goodbye until tomorrow.
